Steps to make Polvo à Lagareiro:
- Wash octopus. Place in a large pot half filled with water. Add one peeled onion, 1/4 cup of olive oil, salt. Cook until tender. Then, remove octopus from pot, cut into large pieces and place in an oven safe Pyrex. Set aside.
- Wash unpeeled potatoes with a vegetable brush. Place in an oven safe dish. Sprinkle lots of salt over it. Place in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes at 400 degrees. When potatoes are done, remove from dish one at a time cleaning off the salt with paper towel. Lightly smash potato with your hand (punch). Place punched potatoes in the Pyrex with the octopus. Set aside.
- In a frying pan, add 1 cup of olive oil, one onion cut up into squares, one green pepper cut up into squares, one red pepper cut up into squares, 3 garlic cloves cut in half, crushed red pepper flakes to taste. Fry until onions are slightly golden.
- Pour fried misture into the Pyrex over the potatoes and octopus. Sprinkle olive oil over it. Place in the oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes.
