  1. Take 4 Crabs
  2. Take to taste Salt
  3. Get 2 tsps Turmeric powder
  4. Take 2 Onion medium size
  5. Take 1.5 tbsps Ginger-garlic paste
  6. Prepare 1.5 Tomato medium size
  7. Prepare 2 Cinnamon large sticks
  8. Take 4 Clove
  9. Prepare 3 Cardamon
  10. Get 1 tsp Cumin powder
  11. Take 1 tsp Coriander powder
  12. Prepare 1 tsp chili powder Red
  13. Take 1/2 tsp Sugar
  14. Take 3 - 4 chillis Green , slit
  15. Get 1/2 cup Mustard oil
  16. Make ready 2 cups Water

I mostly prefer crabs cooked in Indian style (Bengali, to be precise), cooked with a careful balance of spices. This Indian crab curry is from West Bengal. Bengali Style Crab Curry which is called as Kakrar Jhal in Bengali is a sea food gravy prepared using crab and potatoes. Onion, ginger, garlic and dry spices are used to prepare the base of this gravy.

Steps to make Crab Curry Bengali Style:
  1. The crabs should be deshelled, cleaned, and separated.
  2. Marinate the crabs in 1 tsp of salt, and 1 tsp of turmeric powder. Leave aside for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, chop the onion and tomato finely.
  4. In a large wok, heat up 1/4 cup of mustard oil. Now add in the marinated crabs. Sauté for 6-7 minutes, till they change colour and get a light brown coating.
  5. Now remove the crabs from the wok, and keep them aside.
  6. Add 2 tbsp of mustard oil to the hot wok. Then add the cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves.
  7. After 30 secs, add in the onion and the ginger-garlic paste. On medium flame, salute these for 4 minutes.
  8. Now add in the cumin and coriander powder. Also add salt, red chilli powder, and 1 tsp of turmeric powder. Mix well.
  9. Finally add in the tomatoes. Cook this on low heat for 7-8 minutes. Keep stirring.
  10. The masala should start to ooze out oil from the sides. Its colour should now be golden-ish brown. Add 1-2 tbsp of water if required, to prevent the ingredients from getting burnt.
  11. Now, add in the fried crabs. Stir everything around for 1 minutes.
  12. Add in the water. Put this on boil for 4-5 minutes.
  13. Add the sugar, and the green chilli.
  14. The water should reduce down to about 1/3 of its original volume.
  15. Adjust salt according to your taste.
  16. Serve with plain white rice!

However, the crab has its own taste, so addition of crab makes this gravy exotic. Crab masala when prepared in a Bengali style is a delicious Indian curry.
